Genzanmi Yorimasa Composing His Final Poem
Series; Yoshitoshi’s Courageous Warriors
Solemn portrait of the great warrior Genzanmi (Minamoto no) Yorimasa sitting down under a tree to compose a death poem prior to committing suicide. Yorimasa was perhaps best known for helping to kill the mythical nue, a fantastic creature that had been attacking the Imperial Palace and tormenting the emperor. He avoided politics for most of his life, but eventually became entangled within clan conflicts and led the Minamoto forces in the first battle of the Genpei War - the Battle of Uji in 1180. Despite his efforts, the Taira won the battle of Uji and seized the temple there. Yorimasa committed suicide by seppuku. His suicide was the first known instance of a samurai committing seppuku after a military defeat.

Chosei-in on Mount Kenmoku in Sasanoto, Temple 29 of the Chichibu Pilgrimage Route, 1859
Series; Miracles of Kannon (Kannon reigenki)
This large series designed in 1858-1859 by Toyokuni III and Kunisada II in collaboration with Hiroshige II pairs miracles performed by Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, with scenes of temples in the Western, Central, and Eastern provinces of Japan. Toyokuni III created the large figural scenes at the bottom of each image for most of the series, with Kunisada II contributing a few designs, while Hiroshige II designed the landscape views across the top of each print.
Chosei-in on Mount Kenmoku in Sasanoto, Temple 29 of the Chichibu Pilgrimage Route, 1859 - Terrific design of the Dragon Princess (Ryujo) riding on the back of a fierce dragon with dark oxidized red flames flickering about its front legs. She smiles happily as she carries a sea jewel in an elegant container, a young attendant fanning her. Fantastic detail in the scaly dragon and a beautiful blue palette recalling the sea, the home of the Dragon Princess. Includes beautiful embossing in the yellow and white robe.
